An Ohio Third Frontier grant for $1 million awarded to the company in June will make it possible for OrthoHelix to add an additional 42 employees to its current 50, says Dennis Stripe, CEO, as the company will commercialize a new locking mechanism product, OrthoLock, that complements its existing offerings.

OrthoHelix tops recent fundraise with $1M Third Frontier grant

On Wednesday, Third Frontier commissioners approved nearly $14 million in grants for biomedical and medical imaging projects. And OrthoHelix- a Medina, Ohio company that develops orthopedic implant and instrument sets used by surgeons to fix bones during foot, ankle, hand and wrist surgeries- is just the kind of company commissioners like to see.

Ohio Third Frontier Awards Support the State's Growing Biomedical Industry

OrthoHelix Surgical Designs, Inc., located in the City of Medina (Medina County), in collaboration with Hudak, Shunk & Farine Co. LPA, and Orthopedic Research Laboratories, was awarded $1 million for its Mini/Mega MaxLock Extreme Orthopedic Implants project. The project will finalize design for a variable angle locking technology and incorporation into extremity plating systems designed specifically for the foot, ankle, and hand. The technology improves options available to orthopedic surgeons inserting screws and plates to treat trauma and reconstruction in extremities. Full News Release available for download below.

Assessment may stifle growth field

Some of Northeast Ohio's medical device companies think all the surgery Congress just did on the nation's health care system will help them grow bigger and stronger, but others believe it has left them with an infection in the form of a tax that could kill innovation and jobs.
Dennis Stripe, CEO of OrthoHelix Surgical Designs Inc., can understand why they don't all think alike.
By increasing the number of people with health insurance, the health care bill that President Barack Obama signed into law last Tuesday, March 23, could end up helping the Medina company sell more of the surgical implants its makes for people with hand and foot problems. Mr. Stripe figures people with insurance are more likely to get that hammer toe fixed with OrthoHelix's help.
